Victoire Bourgois: Stream of Consciousness
February 26, 2020 - July 31, 2020
Yoshii Gallery is pleased to announce its exhibition, Victoire Bourgois: Stream of Consciousness, opening February 26, 2020. This show will be the artist’s first solo gallery exhibition, and centers around two ambitious, large-scale glass sculptures.
In the central gallery space, a collection of more than a hundred hand-crafted glass stones are laid out, evoking imagery sourced from the natural world. Bourgois’ use of glass as a medium lends the work narrative as well as transient qualities. The glass stones are at once a riverbed and a river; they are both tangible and immaterial, evoking stasis and motion, an isolated moment in time and a constant flow of memory and experience.
The second piece in the exhibition, a sculpture composed of delicate glass rings linked together, hangs in a nearby alcove, reaching from the ceiling to the floor. Although it stands in contrast to the abundant collection of glass stones, the austere glass rings echo the same dynamic qualities of form and light, transformation and impermanence. Together, both works defy the constraints of their medium and transcend the immediacy of the viewing experience by creating a simultaneously ephemeral and enduring moment.
Victoire Bourgois (b.1987) was raised in Paris and now lives in New York City. She holds a degree in literature and semiotics from l’Ecole Normale Supérieure (2008), a Masters in International Relations from the London School of Economics (2009) and is currently pursuing her MFA at NYU. She first taught French literature at university before focusing on her artistic career. Her work is held in private collections internationally.
